Moonie as she is affectionately known here on the farm was our second bottle baby doeling added in the Fall of 2016. We were immediately enamored with her moon spots which sadly have all gone hidden under the hair as she matured. Moon has one of the sweetest personalities in our herd and will follow beside me, without exception.
Moon is another product of Magic, however unlike many of our other Magic kids, Moon has been very slow to grow. Even today, she is significantly smaller than the other does, although is developing in body capacity. We often confuse Moon with Quartzite, they both are virtually identical in appearance and size, and Quartzite is almost seven months younger.
Last fall as we evaluated our does for breeding, we started to see Moon develop from a kid into a nice looking yearling and ultimately decided to breed her to our herd sire, In March 2018, Moon FF one week early and we sadly lost both kids to birthing complications due to her size. We knew it was a risk breeding her and unfortunately our worst case scenario came true. Moon exhibits many of the same characteristics of her dam (see photos above), who also is a bit smaller in stature. If Moon does not develop substantially in the upcoming year, we will consider using her as a foundation doe for our mini breeding program where her small size won’t be a concern. On a positive note, Moon developed a very nice, balanced udder after freshening and is currently producing close to 7#/day.
Moon participated in our June 2018 LA Appraisal and, as expected, scored low in stature due to her overall size. On a positive note, her scores related to udder were quite impressive given her small stature.
2019 Updates
After losing both of her kids last year, we decided to include Moon in our mini breeding program this year. Bred as a foundation doe, Moon produced two drop-dead gorgeous doelings. One immediately was placed with a breeder in WA, the other we retained in our herd and is registered as DeLuna Acres LeBlanc. Moon has come a long way in the past year. She finally went through a growth spurt and is no longer tiny in stature. Her udder is to kill for with a high and wide escutcheon, perfectly placed teats, and high milk production. Moon shocked us in this year’s linear appraisal test scoring an 88 VVVE as a two year old. A huge improvement over her score from last year. We are so impressed with how much this doe has improved in one year. Moon also went on to earn her 1*M milk star this year. Her successes continue to amaze us and we so look forward to seeing what 2020 presents for this doe.
2020 Updates
This doe continues to amaze us as she matures. Still smaller in stature, Moonie continues to produce high numbers in the monthly milk testing and we fully expect she will earn her SG designation this year, fingers crossed.
We bred Moon to our young herd sire, Legend and she produced a doe kid and a buck kid, both large and very correct.
We are disappointed that LA Appraisal has been cancelled for this year as we believe Moon would break through into the 90+ rating category. There’s a lot of like about this girl.
2021 Updates
Moon continues to hit on all cylinders and only gets better with age. A doe that perpetually milked 8-9#, this year Moon kicked off milk test with a 14# test result followed a month later by a 13+# test result. To say we were floored is an understatement and the kids she produces out of our breeding to DeLuna Legend are as correct as one could wish for. We so believe in the breeding, we’ve retained two of her kids in our herd, Miranda and Nadalia. Miranda already went on to win GCH twice and earn her dry leg and we have high show expectations for Nadalia, too.
